Ramsey is a historic market town of around 9,000 people in the Huntingdonshire district, about 9 miles north of Huntingdon. The town grew around Ramsey Abbey, one of the most important Benedictine monasteries in England — its abbot ranked third in Parliamentary precedence, after only Glastonbury and St Albans. That heritage still shapes the town today.
The Great Whyte — Ramsey's characteristically wide main street, built over a culverted medieval canal — is the commercial heart of the town. It's home to a mix of independent shops, caf—s, and services, and the town is notable for having very few vacant shop units. The council is investing in the area: a pedestrianisation scheme for part of the Great Whyte, new "shop in a box" flexible retail units to expand the market offer, and the Ramsey Town Council Civic Centre are all funded through the Combined Authority's Market Towns Programme.
