St Ives is a medieval market town of around 17,000 people on the River Great Ouse, about 11 miles north-west of Cambridge. It's one of Cambridgeshire's most attractive towns — the 15th-century stone bridge with its rare bridge chapel, the riverside Quayside, and the weekly markets draw both residents and visitors year-round.
The town has strong transport links for its size. The Cambridgeshire Guided Busway connects St Ives directly to Cambridge (and provides a popular cycle and walking route along the old railway line). The A14 provides road access east and west, and the A141 links north to Huntingdon. A major A141 improvement scheme — currently in consultation — will enhance bus services, active travel routes, and road capacity around St Ives.
St Ives has a thriving town centre economy built around independent retail, hospitality, caf—s, and professional services, supported by Compass Point and Green business parks on the edge of town. The Combined Authority has invested in shopfront improvement grants, a Broadway cycle link, and a community bandstand. The town's population has grown fivefold in the last 50 years, and with that growth has come a younger demographic and a more diverse demand for services.
